II. TRISTEZA
The second movement describes the emotions during sad, disappointing moments in life. Based on the form used in popular songs (Intro - Verse - Chorus - Post Chorus - Verse - Chorus - Bridge - Chorus - Outro). The thin texture employed in the intro and bridges represents the solitude experienced during difficult moments. The melody in the verses is melancholic and build-up to a climax of sadness in the chorus, emphasised by the high notes in the first violin and the forte dynamic marking on all instruments. To keep the listener interested, the two verses are instrumented differently, with verse two using the expressive sound of the cello and the countermelody in the first violin.
The outro in the final eleven bars gives a sense of optimism; here the composer tries to represent the fact that every difficult moment is tackled by thinking positively.
Instrumentation: Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello.
