Instrumentation: Bb Clarinet I & II
Two Persian Cats explores the different characters of the composers' Persian cats named Chloe and Bailey. The first section represents their Persian origins and is based on a motif ‘A’ built on the Persian modal scale “Shur” and its derivatives. A contrasting slower second motif ‘B’ builds up to the recap of motif A, now accompanied by a Persian dance rhythm.
The Adagio section represents the sweet character of the cats, always in search of cuddles and love. In the final Allegro section, the composer tries to explore their playful character by using the motif A in a blues style which is generally associated with the way cats move and walk around. Throughout the piece, the key signatures were carefully selected to suit the fingering and playability of the clarinet.
The finale marked in Maestoso offers further diversities in harmony and together with the involvement of the musicians to mimic the cats' sounds, this piece will surely please all clarinet players and their audiences.
